CNRS -
The National Organisation for Scientific Research
The local multimedia research network
is supported by major participants with an international
reputation, the CNRS, for example.
The CNRS which links Paris, Aix-en-Provence and Marseille,
plays a major role in the fundamental research in Provence
by involvement with numerous research centres, particularly
in the computer science field:
LSIS (Information and Systems Science Laboratory);
LIF (Fundamental Computer Research Laboratory); LAM
(Laboratory of Astrophysics in Marseille).
The CNRS directs research teams working on knowledge
management:
- L’institut mathématique de Luminy,
(théories de l’information,
et modélisation de systèmes d’information) ;
- The Fundamental Computer Research Laboratory (LIF) on databases and
automatic strategy learning;
- The Information and Systems Science Laboratory (LSIS). Doctorate-level
students at the University of Aix-Marseille III are involved in research teams.

LMA - The Mechanics and
Acoustics Laboratory
The Mechanics and Acoustics Laboratory is a department
of the CNRS, and is made up of 123 staff including
25 CNRS researchers, 7 temporary researchers, 16
research-teachers, 35 engineers, technicians, administration
staff (of whom 13 are research engineers), and 39
doctorate-level students.
INRIA - French National Institute
for Research in Computer Science and Control
The INRIA employs 450 people in the Information and Communication Technology
zone in Nice and is in partnership with the University of Provence. It
is recognised as the leading French research laboratory in digital images
(in Nice and Paris), in content management (Sophia Antipolis), and mobile
tools.
In this way, INRIA has responsibility for the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium)
in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in
the United States and the University of Keio in Japan for Asia
LAM - Laboratory of Astrophysics
in Marseille
Inheriting a two-thousand-year-tradition,
LAM represents the most important space research centre
of the CNRS. The Marseille observatory is the only
European university-teaching-laboratory of astronomical
optics.
Their equipment is regularly used in stratospheric
balloons, sounding rockets and satellites. It has also
contributed to American and Russian space missions,
notably correcting the Hubble telescope lens.

SIS - The Information and Systems Science Laboratory
In Avignon, the SIS laboratory works on
interactivity and image development, applied in the maritime and biomedical
sector. The computer science laboratory has two research departments: networks
and multimedia applications for content management, and interactive voice
automation expertise.
LIF - Fundamental Computer Research
Laboratory
To develop specific research projects, the CNRS via the LIF plays a key co-ordination
role between Paris and the INRIA, the internationally recognised research centre
in this field.
GMEM – Experimental Music
Group of Marseille
The experimental music group of Marseille (GMEM) is one of the premier musical
research centres in Europe. The GMEM’s activities encompass all phases
of project development (help with creation, editing, broadcasting). Research
into music computing is concentrated on spacialisation, synthesis, and gesture-driven
interfaces.
