A Driving
Force For Innovation
The Belle-de-Mai National Multimedia Incubator is an organisation designed to
assist the leaders of innovative projects to convert their ideas into viable
businesses, in educational and cultural multimedia.
Approved by the Ministries of Research and National Education, the centre helps
to give students and teachers an impressive digital working environment, and
to enhance the standing of both France and Europe in the knowledge industry sector.
It also aims to increase the transfer of public sector research results towards
new services and new products, by encouraging the creation and development of
innovative small businesses, in educational and cultural multimedia.
Established in Marseille, in the Belle-de-Mai
Media Centre, the incubator is the only one of
its kind in France specialised in this area.
It receives projects from all over the country.
The Networks
The Belle-de-Mai National Multimedia Incubator
is essentially working in the knowledge economy
based on the concepts of links, networks
and sharing.
It acts at the heart of
partnership networks covering different aspects
of its activities.
Partnerships include:
 |
the
incubator’s founding members, in public
sector research and education; |
|
 |
the
multimedia content sector of Marseille and
its region: businesses moving on from the “incubation”,
the Belle-de-Mai businesses, other regional
companies, public sector multimedia participants,
audiovisual and content industries; |
|
 |
France
Incubation and 30 other public sector incubators. |
|
 |
The
structures that help to create and develop
companies include: the Marseille-Provence
Chamber of Commerce and Industry; the business
incubators of Marseille-Innovation, Provence-Promotion;
financing companies (Caisse des Dépôts
et Consignations, Primaveris, Sofaris...);
l'Union Patronale des Bouches-du-Rhône… |
|
 |
Cultural
participants: Ministère de la Cuture,
Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles,
Système-Friche-Théâtre… |
In July, 2003, the Belle-de-Mai
Multimedia Incubator celebrated its third year
of existence. By this date, it had supported
32 cultural and educational multimedia projects,
and helped create and develop 18 innovative companies.
The incubator participates in structuring an
active multimedia centre in Marseille. Its national
vocation, in which it receives projects from
all over France, contributes to widen the influence
of the Marseille sector. Its specialised theme
and position at the heart of La Friche de la
Belle-de-Mai contributes to clarifying the sector’s
objectives.
The incubator participates in numerous events
and professional meetings: Pépinière-Incubateur
working breakfasts, meetings of the ORME (The
Observatory for Multimedia Resources in Education),
MILIA (a global forum for interactive industries),
Imagina, World Education Market, etc.
Since it was
founded in 2000, the incubator has received more
than 150 innovative projects
from all over France. It has appraised more than
80 projects and has welcomed 32 “in incubation”.
At present these projects have led to 18 innovative
businesses, and 40 jobs.
These projects participate
in all the main trends observed in education
and cultural multimedia:
e-learning (on-line learning and training), learning
through play (educational games), benchmarking
and research tools, innovative uses for technology…
The Belle-de-Mai Incubator also welcomes the
MaTICE project - Marseille’s Information
Technology Plan for Culture and Education. This
communication plan aims to structure a regional
centre for research, creation, publishing and
broadcasting in educational and cultural multimedia.
